Overview

Smarter Balanced will reserve and cover the cost of a nightly hotel room for each participant based on the information provided through the registration form. Please do not book directly with the hotel.

You will receive your hotel confirmation by email at least one week before travel. If you do not receive it or have questions about your reservation, please contact events@smarterbalanced.org.

Ground Transportation

Participants are responsible for arranging their own ground transportation to and from Mission Pacific Beach Resort.

San Diego International Airport is approximately 40 miles from the resort, or a 45- to 55-minute drive. John Wayne Airport is another option and is approximately a 50-minute drive from the resort.

Reasonable ground transportation expenses, including taxi, Uber, Lyft, and SuperShuttle, are eligible for reimbursement. Rideshare fares typically range from $55 to $85 each way but may vary based on demand and time of day. Please select the most economical option.

For your safety, confirm that the license plate, vehicle, and driver match the information in your rideshare app before entering the vehicle.

Travel Information

Air Travel

Smarter Balanced will cover approved airfare booked through Engine, our travel partner.
Returning Engine users: Sign in to Engine using your existing account. Reset your password if needed.
New Engine users: After registering, you will receive an email from Engine with account setup instructions.
Roundtrip flights under $600 may be booked directly through Engine.
Flights over $600 require advance approval from events@smarterbalanced.org.
Standard coach/economy airfare and one checked bag are covered.
Changes or cancellations require advance approval. Contact events@smarterbalanced.org before modifying your reservation.

Driving and Train Travel

Driving

All attendees planning to drive must receive advance approval from Smarter Balanced.
To request approval, email nisreen@gearsk12.com with a cost comparison showing that mileage, meals, parking, and lodging in transit are less expensive than airfare and airport transportation.
Approved mileage will be reimbursed at 70 cents per mile.
Smarter Balanced will cover parking for the nights of October 13–15:
- Valet parking: $35 per night, with in/out privileges
- Self-parking: $10 per night
Attendees are responsible for parking costs associated with additional nights.

Train Travel

Attendees traveling within California may travel by train. Smarter Balanced will reimburse the train ticket and reasonable transportation between the traveler’s home or hotel and the train station.
